First, I would like to thank Dan O’Connell for serving the Greater Nevada Detachment as Commandant for the past few years. He has been a very effective and vigorous leader.
Second, I would like to thank all the past officers serving under Dan and other Commandants to bring us to where we stand today.
I would also like to thank Ghost and his crew for continuing the great support and for hosting our meeting. I would name individuals but I’m afraid I would leave someone out, and no one should be left out.
Now for the present. Thank you for having confidence in me and for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Commandant. I will endeavor to keep all the great things this detachment has achieved and will do my best to bring us forward with great assistance from our elected and appointed staff. If you notice anything we can do better I hope you will send us a message and if you notice us doing anything wrong I expect you to bring it to our attention.
My agenda is as follows:
Membership – We need to increase our membership and make our current members feel relevant. We would appreciate any help you can provide.
Communication – The biggest problem I’ve noticed in almost all organizations is communication. We need to communicate from the top-down and from the bottom up. Currently, we seem to have lost communication at the Department level. I will push for greater communication with Department, Division, and National. In addition, I would like to have online meeting capabilities. Hopefully, we will not need to utilize media due to sickness or viruses, but as we’ve seen, we need to stay in touch. It would be great to be able to attend our monthly meeting even if you do not feel well enough to attend in person.
Honor Guard – I would like to see more volunteers on the Honor / Color Guard. More members mean a greater presence for those who have served. Families are always extremely grateful, even at those times when they’re going through difficult times. I have presented the flag on many occasions and can tell you I feel humbled and have a sense of pride that I can send off a veteran who did their part to keep us free.
Social Night – Every Friday night is social night. Normally, this begins around 1800. However, if you arrive early I encourage talking to others in the club. Make them feel welcome because they are welcome and if someone would like to join, ask the bartender for an application. They have a binder with application forms. Applications may also be completed and submitted online at our website, https://www.gnd186mcl.org/. Get in conversations and find out what brought them in, what was their MOS, where did they go to basic training, etc.
Lastly, National would like to see a Suicide Prevention Task Force in each detachment. If you are interested in helping out, please let us know.
